On a warm Los Angeles evening at SoFi Stadium, the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener between Iran and New Zealand became far more than a football match. It turned into a powerful display of Iranian identity, resistance, and the unbridgeable gap between the people and the Islamic Republic.Despite FIFA’s controversial decision to ban the historic Lion and Sun flag, labeling it a “political symbol”, Iranian fans inside the stadium proudly waved it anyway. Dozens of supporters carried the pre-1979 Iranian flag with its golden lion and sun emblem, while countless others wore it on T-shirts and apparel. The iconic banner was visible throughout the stands, a sea of green, white, and red defiance that security could not fully suppress.

Fans Reject the Islamic Republic’s Flag and Anthem

The contrast inside the stadium was stark. When the enormous official flag of the Islamic Republic was unfurled on the pitch as part of pre-match ceremonies, many fans responded with boos and turned their backs. The national anthem drew a similar mixed-to-hostile reaction scattered cheers drowned out by widespread disapproval. Some supporters even turned their backs completely during the anthem, sending a clear message: this flag and this anthem do not represent us.

Powerful Rally Outside SoFi Stadium

Outside the stadium, hundreds of Iranian-Americans gathered in a passionate protest organized by groups including the National Council of Resistance of Iran. They waved the Lion and Sun flag proudly, chanted “USA,” and held photos of athletes and protesters killed by the regime. Some demonstrators tore up Islamic Republic flags in a symbolic rejection of the theocratic government.

Among the speakers at the rally was Younes Sadaghiani, a previous guest on The New Persian Times Podcast. Taking the stage right before kick-off, Sadaghiani delivered a fiery speech, declaring “FIFA is a corrupt institution” and urging the crowd to “Raise your flags high.” His powerful words resonated deeply with the protesters, many of whom responded with chants and raised Lion and Sun flags in solidarity.

One protester, captured the broader sentiment: “This team does not represent the people of Iran. They represent the government of Iran… FIFA just banned our real flag, so we are here to show our real flag.”

Belgian-Iranian parliamentarian Darya Safai was also among those who proudly carried the Lion and Sun flag into the stadium despite the ban, later posting: “I proudly carried the real Iranian flag, the historic Lion and Sun, into the stadium in Los Angeles despite FIFA’s ban. No ideological flag can take the place of our Lion and Sun.”

A Symbol of a Free Iran

For millions of Iranians at home and in the diaspora, the Lion and Sun is not merely a historical flag — it is the true emblem of Iran. It represents a nation with ancient roots, a proud heritage, and a future free from the repression of the Islamic Republic. FIFA’s ban, reportedly influenced by pressure from the Iranian Football Federation’s demand for “respect for the official Iranian flag,” only highlighted the regime’s desperation to control the narrative abroad while crushing dissent at home.

The scenes at SoFi Stadium on June 15 — the 2-2 draw on the pitch notwithstanding — showed that no amount of bans or propaganda can erase the Iranian people’s attachment to their real identity.

Trump’s Latest Words on Negotiations with the Islamic Republic

As these powerful images of Iranian pride and resistance unfolded in Los Angeles, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social about ongoing talks with the very regime these fans reject. In a recent statement, Trump declared: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!” He also authorized the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, writing: “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Earlier posts from the President had noted that “Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran are proceeding nicely,” while warning that it must be “a Great Deal for all or, no Deal at all.”

These developments come against the backdrop of recent U.S. and allied actions and fragile ceasefire talks. For many watching the SoFi events, the contrast is striking: while Iranian patriots worldwide fly the Lion and Sun as a symbol of hope and freedom, international diplomacy continues to engage directly with the Islamic Republic.

The Message from SoFi

The Lion and Sun did not just appear at SoFi Stadium — it roared. It reminded the world that the Iranian people’s struggle for dignity, freedom, and a return to their authentic identity continues, whether on the streets of Tehran, in the diaspora of “Tehrangeles,” or inside — and outside — a World Cup stadium in California.

FIFA may have tried to silence the Lion and Sun. The Islamic Republic may try to claim the national team as its own. But on this night in Los Angeles, the true voice of Iran — proud, defiant, and unbowed — was impossible to ignore.Long live a free Iran.

Long live the Lion and Sun.
